I'm in Shropshire too and go to a couple of local groups, Shropshire Gundog Society meet up once a week but the classes for this year are coming to an end soon due to the shooting season coming up, you could always tag along and see if it's the kind of thing you are after, if you fancy it let me know
I also have one to one's with a local trainer, i found word of mouth the best way to find a trainer and to go watch them work, see if the way they are with the dogs, and humans, is what you are after as they all have their own ways of doing things.
Another group I go to are Marches Gundog Training Group, we meet on the first Sunday of the month for a day of gundog training and socialising near Knockin in N.Shropshire. The day includes breakfast and Sunday lunch in the local pub and training in a safe environment with all the different types of terrain required. All gundog breeds and ability levels are welcome. Next one is this Sunday
You could also join Nobs, they might be able to point you in the right direction of local meets and trainers too www.nobs.org.uk
