I have seen this on other forums, and it may well have been on here before, but it is always interesting and there are always new people about!

I chose the name Vinnie for a number of reasons. It was originally going to be just Vin, but I knew everyone would lengthen it. Besides, I like to have two syllables for when they are in trouble (surely not often biggrin.gif ) I can use just Vin when I need something quick for attention. And finally, I didn't know any other dogs with the same name - always a plus! Of course, everyone thinks he is named after Vinnie Jones, but hopefully he won't be too much of a thug!

I was also fortunate enough to be able to choose his KC name (in fact I named the whole litter) - he is registered as In It To Vin It. After a number of years on the agility scene I wanted a winning name that was easily pronounced and not too long! laugh.gif

Oh, and my user name. It is a very random Terry Pratchett Discworld reference. When I was looking for a internet user name years ago I just grabbed the Discworld Companion and looked for inspiration.

Looking forward to finding out a little more about everyone elses names! cool.gif

I didn't tell my daughter we were getting a dog (we had often wished for one over the years), I didn't want kiddie pressure into choosing perhaps a not very suitable pup from the litter.

She was a bit upset initially that she hadn't been involved - so i let her choose the name, hence Angel. Must add i felt really stupid in the first few training months of screaming "Angel" across a field, as she certainly didn't behave like one!

I wanted a scottish name. We looked at Dougal, Haggis, etc but then looked in the gaelic dictionary.

My son spotted the word Brodie - which means ditch - and since that is where many springer like to spend their time - it seemed the right choice. dry.gif laugh.gif

Helena- 09-27-2008
Loki - she is the only dog we've had from a puppy, so her name was planned in advance. Loki is the Norse god if mischief, so it seemed a very apt name for a springer.

Merlin - we liked the continuation of the 'folklore' theme, just seemed to suit him when we met him.

Zuri - She was originally called Sophie, but we felt it rhymed too much with Loki, hence Zuri (we believe it to be a Swahili word meaning beautiful)

Amber - one look at this little girls eyes will explain why we renamed her Amber (she was originally called Jude)

obi's_mum- 09-27-2008
Obi's breeder wanted a to keep a pup from his litter, and he wanted one that looked as close as possible to his dog who had recently passed away (the pup's grandfather).
Obi looked the least like his Grandad so wasn't in the running to be kept, so he was called Other Boy, shortened to 'OB' laugh.gif
I like the name Obi so kept it as that biggrin.gif

All our dogs have come pre named from rescue, Judy (never really liked it as a dogs name), Woody (loved the name loved the dog), Jack (I am told is a naughty boys name!). The only name we have changed was Bella's she was originally called Nina but I had told my niece that when we got a new dog after losing Woody that she could choose the name. She wanted to call her Grace after her but I said you didn't usually call a dog after someone you know so she chose Cinderella instead huh.gif after a little more discussion we compromised on Bella.

Its a good thing we don't pick our owns names as our cats are called, Kitty and Ginger as this is what we called them while we were deciding on a name, they are both around 15 now so I think its a little late to decide on one now tongue.gif

Sir Freddy- 09-27-2008
Freddy started life as Red, my nephew had a speech impediment so Red beceme Fred as Fwed doesn't seem as pronounced a difference laugh.gif . The Sir Freddy as a user name, well you only have to meet Freddy to understand cool.gif .

Brice, I wanted a scottish name as he is a scottish breed. Brice means according to different websites either speckled (he is grey brindle) or fast and as a dog from coursing lines he is that too, sometimes laugh.gif .

Mugi, came with the name and as he was 10 and recalled well to it I wasn't changing it. I wasn't sure before I met him but it really suits him. He also gets called Moo, Moomin and Troll (from Moomin Troll laugh.gif ).

Chase... Well he is a french breed from french import stock, his breeder is french and so I looked to french to choose his name. He was also born last year and all Brittanys are registered to a year letter (His KC name is Patouche Cardinal for Callmillard) so I tried to find a name with C as the start letter. Chasse in french is the verb for hunting and as he is a working dog who hunts like a dream Chase was the name I chose.

Piper came as you know as Chico, he didn't know his name and I was finding it hard to call Chico and Chase. So I sat down with the computer to look through boy dog names that didn't start with B, C, F, M, S (as it is so close in sound to F) and Piper was the first name I found that fitted him and I can call it with all the other dogs names - err yes I did sit in my living room chanting Piper/Chase, Freddy/Piper, Mugi/Piper, Piper/Brice rolleyes.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif .

nicky- 09-27-2008
Lola was already named.
Pansy had a face that looked like a Pansy when she was little.
Chablie I named tongue.gif It would be Chablis like the wine but that would make her male here in France.
Dawson was already named - but was going to be Daquiri (carrying on the drink theme) if he had not been.
Crocus at 2 days old was called Crunch but he turned out to be so ill and weak that the name did not seem appropriate so it was changed to Crocus - I think now Crunch might have been better!

sallyandyoyo'smum- 09-27-2008
Mine have all come from rescue and already had names so I haven't been able to name any.

Yoyo took a while to get used to.....but to be honest it's mostly Yogi Bear now anyway laugh.gif

when we (the family) got Sundae we all put names in a hat and pulled one out. Thank goodness we didn't pull out my brother's choices....at the time they were Kermit and Morticia!!!!! blink.gif

Bouncy- 09-27-2008
Kizzy is actally Kismet, chosen because when we went to look for a dog she crawled on my knee while I was looking at the litter and just stayed there. Apparently she usually ignored visitors so I decided it was fate that we found her, hence Kismet.

angell- 09-27-2008
Until now I've not changed the names of the dogs I have taken in. Sweetie Pie (Tweekie), Elsie (after the Borden cow) and Casey (?) all kept their names. I was going to name two after "Trooper" Thronton and "Squire" Danaher from the movei "The Quiet Man" Then a third came along unexpectedly, and I thought of "Micheleen" till someone at work said well they are "My Three Sons"

If you are old enough or watch Nickelodeon on tv, it's a US tv series from the late 50's and 60's. A widower had three sons named Robbie, Chip and Ernie. I'm old enought to remember the first time it aired sad.gif wink.gif

murphysgirl- 09-27-2008
Murphy wasn't the most orginal name for a black lab, in hindsight I should of named him Marmite! Murphysgirl as a user name, because lets face it I'm here to be a slave to my pets. laugh.gif

Racer can with his, named by the breeders son because he ran fast. smile.gif

The cats moved in with OH and names and the chickens are following a royality theme, Elizabeth (Tudor), Mary (Stuart) and Guinevere (king Arthurs wife)

Ellsbells- 09-27-2008
Elly was called Molly but i didnt think she looked like a Molly so changed it to Elly cause i liked it, simple as!

la_tinkerbelle- 09-27-2008
Archie was called 'Monty' when I re-homed him, but to be honest I thought it was a bit too .. erm, effeminate, poncy?! laugh.gif laugh.gif so I changed it to Archie... just cos I loved the name smile.gif I like the hard 'ch' sound in doggy names...

Sonny was already called this when I rehomed him, and although I hate the name and it's not one I would ever have chosen, and if I had a pound for every time I hear 'as in Sonny and Cher?' rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif but it suits him and looking at him he just doesn't look like any other name to warrant me changing it laugh.gif

My fav ever dogs name is Charlie tho... my old boy was called this and I just loved it wub.gif

I like all the diversity on here of our dogs names smile.gif

murphy's mum- 09-27-2008
We got Murphy on St. Patrick's Day, so it had to be irish. Paddy was a bit too obvious, so it was Murphy. Turns out it really suits him!
