Hi everybody,
We have been reading all the great things on this web site for a few weeks, while waiting in anticipation for our new baby!
we are adopting keela in nov, she was found as a stray in really poor condition and pregnant! she had 7 pure ss a few weeks ago. we dont think shes had a very good life so far, kept in and used for breeding.
keela is a grest mum, shes has a fabulous temprement, kind, gentle and so in need of loving.
She is full of life and will do anything for a game of catch. we went on a 4hr round trip to meet her and had to come away without her as shes with the pups of course, we are missing her already and can't wait to have her in our family.
we are determined to give her the best possible future ever, so any advice for settling her in etc would be great. we are experienced dog owners but shes our first ss, our beautiful collie cross passd away in august. our homes very empty ,even when full of humans without our furry friend! amanda x

Hi Amanda, what a lovely ending to Keela's story, to be getting a new beginning in a happy home with you - please keep us updated, and lots of pics of her too please!
Hi Amanda,
Like the others I think you are doing a wonderful thing.
You will no doubt get really good advice from the adoption centre, but as you were asking I thought I'd add my (non expert) ideas.
Firstly, you will probably need to build her up a little, so frequent small meals would be better than one or two big ones. I think three times a day until she is stronger. Also keep the exercise down until she has put some weight on. No reason why she can't be walked, just don't do 6 miles a day!
Check with your vet on the worming issue. She might need doing monthly for a while. They know best.
A healthy adult springer bitch should be around 20-22kg I think. (this is my vet's opinion) So weigh her periodically to get her up to the healthy range.
Top tip is to weigh yourself, then both of you. She is the difference between the two.
Don't feel sorry for her for what has happened in the past. Dogs live in the moment, and you giving her a loving home is what matters. What I mean by this is it is OK to set boundaries and give her some rules.
I have had a rescue dog in the past (border collie) and she never stopped telling me in her way how grateful she was.
You have to own one to understand this.
Now where are those photos, we love photos!
