Elly is 4 months old, we got her when she was 11 weeks old.
When i am training her at home if i use treats 99% of the time she will do as she is asked first time, but if i try to get her to do something without a treat in my hand like down and sit forget it. She just digs her heels in and stares at me like i am the stupid one for even thinking shes going to do it without being given a reward.
Am i expecting to much to soon?

initially they learn that they do the thing asked of them they get a treat. With mine i gave treats for everytime he sat, stayed, or lie down for quite a while then i would do it with a treat every 4 in 10 say then less or sometimes more. He never knew when a treat was coming so did it with the anticiaption of getting one. I then started just giving praise with no treats. he now will sit, stay and lie down mostly on command without a treat on offer but i still have to get him to do this when outside with distractions more.
Eventually it will become second nature ( rolleyes.gif ) and training treats wont be needed.
saying all that he still has deaf days and i never try to get him to do anything at the moment when he is distracted as here is no point. Although today he was chasing around with 2 dogs on a walk and i whistled him back and he came, followed by the 2 dogs!!
Patience, as they say, is a virtue!!!!!!!!!!! laugh.gif

Do you hid the treats in your hand in such away she can't see them, and wont be able to tell the difference if you've got one or not? And once she's done what you've asked it too late for her to so no, if she doesn't get a reward.
I still reward mine on recall (Murphys four), but his recall got worse so I still reward ramdonly, some walks not at all, others all the time, some when I can be bothered, But until he comes back he does know as he can't see the reward and wont risk missing out!

I still have treats around my person when training, sometimes they get one and sometimes they don't but they are all confident that there is a chance so they will usually work for me.

I was once told by a friend who competes in WT and Shutzhund at the highest levels that as I work for a salary why should I expect my dogs to work for free??

Treats were once described to me as being like a Fruit Machine, some times you win a little bit, sometimes nothing but there is always the chance of hitting the Jackpot.

So, sometimes Dex gets a treat, sometimes he doesn't but occasionally he gets a jackpot, this seems to keep his mind on the task - well mostly...... ph34r.gif

We had the same trouble with Archie, no treat no do. eventually realised that in fact we were bribing him to do things rather than rewarding him.

Things are now back in our favour and treats are slowly being eliminated, the main emphasis is now praise only.
