Hi there,

My Springer was clipped for the first time yesterday. When I picked her up the groomer said she had ticks. I was so embarassed! Does this make me a terrible owner? I have never noticed them before, she found about 4 or 5.

My girly is very fluffy and I'm going to keep checking for them from now on but I'm not too sure what I'm looking for. Can anyone help?

Thanks!

weird lumps that look a little like grey-ish peas. The longer the tick is clamped onto the dog, the fatter is gets (swollen with blood) so easier to spot.

I try to check mine carefully but last night i was giving sally and cuddle when i felt one through her fur. so they can sneak up on you! don't beat yourself up, I have removed three this week! (and have left a panicked message in springer health wink.gif )

The male is sometimes arounds where the large female is, so have a look through the fur and try and get rid of that too.

I find the most common places seem to be on the head, ears and once between the toes!

Ticks don't make you a terrible owner. I would say that you are a good owner biggrin.gif
Dogs only get ticks if they are out running and enjoying life.
Check her out after every walk. Ticks are easy to find when grooming.
After every walk I towel my two down and have a check over them to find any nasties biggrin.gif

I dont know if we live in a tick area but lots of our walking is/will be done is sheep and deer areas such as the Yokshire moors and the Lakes, I took the decision to use Advantix through the summer months upping his flea treaments, read some on the net and you really could over react, but my reasonng was that if I missed a tick the advantix would sort it out, it doesnt stop them latching on but kills them no chance of burrowing in or leaving the head behind, balanced using the chemical treatment on the little man against maximising his protection against the little horrors, unsure.gif
