Hi guys, just after bit of advice.

Noticed Toffee was limping Sat and when looked at her back paw one of her smaller pads is split and and some of skin cut away maybe cut it when out in field.

I'm a nurse and so have been cleaning it daily with salty water, then putting some antibacterial cream/gel we have for animals then a dressing pad before wrapping round with fabulous vetwrap. Don't know what else...if anything....I should do.

Wanted to post a pic but have no idea how to get it from 'my pictures' to post!!!

Has anyone else's dog cut/split their paw if so how long does it take to heal and do I need to take the vet? Doesn't look infected, so don't know what else vet would do.

Thankyou!!

Poor Toffee, Angel cut her pad, and it seemed to take ages to heal, it would start to heal then would gape like a mouth. It was clean and on the whole dry, but i took her to the vets as i thought it would never heal. He said it wasn't worth doing anything to it - he said he would of had to cut the dead surrounding skin off.

It did heal eventually. He just advised keeping it covered.

Get air to it as much as you can in a clean enviroment. Boo split his and we flushed with CS and stuck a dog boot on for walks, flushed again and left open to dry out. After 3 days or so he was fine with out the dog boot.

Flush flush flush with CS wink.gif

Thanks that's reassuring that doing right thing. So would you only cover for walks? Is it ok to keep open in the day at home? She licks it alot.

Ps sorry for being stupid but what it CS?

Collodial Silver wink.gif

Is it feeling hot ? Or looking swollen?

My Casey came to me with a cut pad. Did it on a piece of glass. You will want to be sure it heals from the inside out. Or it can fester and abscess. I kept it clean and covered when out. Had to change the bandage often, but kept it dry. Inside the he could let it air.

Will definitely keep an eye on it. It's not hot or swollen, will try and get air to it when in house during day and dress it before walk. Do you think it's ok to let her off lead with ball? She doesn't seem to be in pain and only limps abit when first gets up from lying down.

Have never heard of Collodial Silver? What is it and where can I get it from?

Had more than a few cut/scuffed pads with Ben. Personally, I'd say keep her on restricted exercise for a few days. Lead walk on soft ground or just in the garden (a paddle in the sea is good, but no sand afterwards).

Otherwise, what Fudds said.

Nooooo wink.gif

On lead deffo, it killed Boo but keep her close till you see it knit. Look online for CS, Sandy had some good links, do a search, failing that pm me wink.gif

Jess is forever splitting her paw pads open, I clean it out and if its a clean cut, I superglue it, otherwise they would never heal with her.

biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif Its been a long day today! blink.gif

Jess is always splitting her paw pads open on something, normally doing something she shouldnt dry.gif

Superglue is brill for get the pads to heal quicker without running the risk of the pads becoming infected. Just becareful not to glue yourself to the pad though biggrin.gif

What normal superglue? blink.gif Will it not sting if it goes on the cut?

princess- 09-25-2008
Hey guys, thanks so much for advice.

Will definitely retrict exercise and maybe have a dip in sea because not far from us. If I uncover it Toff licks like mad at it!! Doesn't look infected at the moment but will it stay like that if she licks it so much?!

Are you guys serious re superglue??!! Makes sense as a nurse use it to glue head wounds but you do mean proper superglue? Like UHoo glue!?? biggrin.gif
