Took the Norty Girls and OH to a rather nice guest house called the Wensleydale Heifer in West Witton, North Yorks. Very nice, rather pricey - £120 per night inc breakfast. Each room has a different theme and the restaurant is well-known locally for good food.

I'd have to say that the place is more dog-neutral than dog-friendly in that there's no real outside space apart from the carpark and the entrance is directly onto a busy road (ie about 3 feet away). The staff were very friendly etc, but after the Norty Girls were very very norty and boisterous at breakfast, we did leave them in our room for dinner. No other dogs there at the time, so I felt a bit of a nuisance. However, lovely open fireplace downstairs to sit by and good food.

I think for my own peace of mind, I'd go somewhere a bit more relaxed, that maybe offered dog beds and bowls etc. One couple had come away without their Newfoundland dogs and said they'd taken them to Gleneagles where you are provided with a dog bed etc etc. Sadly, one of their dogs peed on a marble pillar (bladder capacity of a newfie = considerable) and the other one had run through the fountain! Cheered me up no end.

By the way, we stayed in the James Herriot room - not sure if signed photos of Robert Hardy quite my idea of attractive decor!

Agreed. We thought we'd push the boat out. For £120 smackers a night I was rather expecting foot massages, jacuzzi, own butler etc etc. Nice enough, but I think that I'm a bit out of touch with what hotels etc cost these days. unsure.gif

I thought the food was excellent though. It's a fish place, so if you don't like fish don't try it. Considering the price of the accomodation the food was more reasonable (not cheap). The mains were up to £18 and a bottle of house wine was £15. This was for restaurant food not pub grub, so for the special occassion I thought it was worth it. Fiona had salmon and wasn't knocked out by it, but my halibut was sensational.

Puds were LARGE and definately worth the price.
