Feel a bit silly today. Ollie had chicken for breakfast and then an hour or so after he was asleep and my OH stroked him and felt a hugh lump on his jaw. We both panicked thinking it was to do with his mouth problem and rushed him to the vets. Turned out it was a lump of chicken (not even the bone just meat) Vet pulled it out and Ollie tried to eat it!!!
Course this got the subject round to what i feed him and he said that although he doesnt have aproblem as such with BARF feeding he said dogs can become very ill with samanella (spelt wrong!) from raw chicken. OH now wants to stop feeding him RAW but i am still convinced it is better for him. Any advice on this wouold be great, .
Oh and while we were there he got the results back for the biopsy and they are ok.

Thats great news It must be a weight off your mind, sorry can't help with regards to chicken as i don't feed raw.

By the way did the vet laugh?

Please forget your worries about salmonella Sandra, the chicken isn't in their system long in enough for any bacteria to get hold of, people have been raw feeding their dogs chicken for years and have never had a problem with it, this includes me. Some of these vets ought to get their facts straight before scaremongering and to be honest it just goes to show how little your vet actually knows about raw feeding and to be even more blunt much about the way the dogs digestive system actually works
Still at the end of the day if you would rather listen to what your vet is telling you and that raw feeding is going to probably kill your dog then I suggest you go back to feeding kibble and other commercial type foods.

A bit of reassurance from me, mine have ben fed raw chicken now for almost twoyears, not even a tummy upset and certainly no sign of salmonella, I'm pretty sure if they were going to get salmonella from raw chicken they would have done so by now as they have it at least 4 times a week, even old boy Ollie

i just have to convince my OH now as he has not researched as much as me. Im sold on RAW and will continue to do so, i would just rather not get into discussions with my vet about i anymore

no the vet didnt laugh he thought it disgusting, escpecially when Ollie tried to eat it again. We thought it quite funny though

Please don't worry about salmonella. I've been feeding raw for 7 yrs now - 7 dogs, some from pups, some rescues - even an immune suppressed dog - and none of them have got salmonella.
And neither have we just wash hands v thoroughly after feeding, like you would if you were preparing a raw chicken for yourselves.

My vet mentioned it when I told him I fed Brodie raw. When I asked him to explain, he said the dog cant get Salmonella - but you can.

And I have to agree - proper hand washing after feeding raw.

My two have been eating raw chicken since they were 4 months old ,they are 2 and a half now and have never had any probs.

Vets are only given small amount of training in the feeding of pets and this is mostly done and funded by the pet food industry.
My vet advertises leading brands of kibble in his surgery. Saying this he is happy with how my dogs look and the way I feed them and compliments me on this . I have had to change vets has the vet I had before was less than happy His loss
