Our 4 month old springers poo seems to be getting looser every day, its making it hard to take her out as its very hard to clean up, she is fed on Wagg dry puppy food andhas occational dry treats she is also dragging her bum along the floor has anyone any ideas what i can do to make her more solid many thanks

i no i had this problem with Oliver and i tried lots of dried food. I now feed RAW and he never has this problem anymore, its not for everyone, i agree, but it woked for him.
I know my friends dog was the same and she switched to Arden grange which stopped any runs.

The dragging of her bum along the floor, might mean she is having trouble with her anal glands! also might be because of the runny poo. Do you think she might of picked something up on her walks, one of mine did this and that was what my vet suggested. Try feeding her on boiled chicken and rice, this was also advice from my vet. Seemed to clear up after two meals unsure.gif

We had exactly the same problem with Alfie. If you feed chicken and rice for 2 or 3 days and it corrects the problem then it is likely to be that the food doesn't agree with him.

Alfie started on Wagg, then Bakers (don't go there with this one), then James Wellbeloved and we are now on Burns. Burns has sorted him out. It is a case of trial and error.

This might sound daft but after correcting things by feeding Burns, we found that we went downhill for a few days which we initially couldn't understand. We came to the conclusion though that it was down to teething rolleyes.gif

As well as my springer I also have a 14 month old lab cross cocker. I had real problems with his tummy as a pup, i tried everything. Good quality food helped but no enough. When i got my springer her breeder told me that he had the same problem with his and to try a food with a lower protien content. Around that time he started on adult dog food (which has less protien in) and his problems cleared up very quickly. He hasn't had any problems for a few months now.
Hope this helps

Good Luck,

Meghan, Bailey and Abby.

Hi thanks for all the advice think i will have to try some different foods thought i might try some bran in food and see if that helps at all anything is worth a try thanks

Is it just runny poo or is it slimy (like mucous?)

Daisy_Dawg- 10-01-2008
I wouldn't try the bran - that might make the poo situation worse!

Stick to chicken and rice for a few days and see if that clears it up, as the others have suggested. If it does, you'l know it's food related.

We had huge problems when we first had Daisy, and have all bit given up with any kibble now, and she has 99.9% raw diet which has solved the majority of the problems. She has bran in her mince just to keep up with the glands problem, but that's more to do with her distractive nature - she can't sit still after pooing long enough for them to empty laugh.gif - than her diet!

If after chicken and rice, you have the same problem, then I would suggest a trip to the vet and check it's nothing parasitic such as worms or an infection such as campylobacter.

Poppys first couple of poos of the day are ok fairly solid and at least i can scoop them then they seem to go down hill from there on they do sometimes have mucus in them and she is straining but nothing is happening

If you can get a sample of poo with the mucus in and take it to your vets - it could be colitis (sp?) or as Daisy_Dawg says campylobacter (humans can get this too).

Angel had very similar problems a few years back, the poo had a REALLY bad smell (not like normal poo if that makes sense).

Ive done Poppys anal glands today and quite alot came out so that might be the cause of the bum dragging will see what happens over the next few days thanks wink.gif

i tried several foods before finding trophy hypoallergenic sensitive - Stellar is good on this and it seems to have solved the problem

I had a year of runny poo with my lab puppy. Tried many things but she was cured permanently after 2 days of feeding her CSJ CP18. That was 6 months ago and she hasn't had a problem since. So impressed with the results I'm now feeding all 4 of my dogs on it.

Never heard of that where do i get it from thanks wink.gif

If you email them they will send you some samples of food, and suggest what might suit your dog.

Good luck!
