Roly is one next week and has so far been fed on JWB kibble.

He has never been the type of boy who chows down into a bowl of food.

We put kibble down in the morning and he'll have a little nibble. We then put most of what's left in his treat pouch and he has it as treats during this morning walk/training session. The remainder goes in his run for him to graze during the day, although he rarely finishes it all.

We do the same in the evening - he eats more on his walk (which worries me a little regarding eating and running - but getting a kibble at a time I suppose by the end of the training session he's not had an awful lot).

He has a few extras every now and then - usually as extra special treats during training - cherry tomato (not the green stalky bits), pasta, cooked chicken, smelly sausage and homemade liver bread and crackers.

He is a good weight for his age (19 kilos which is about 3 kilos lighter than his dad) and his coat is nice and glossy.

Anyway, we thought we might like to replace his breakfast kibble with a chicken wing maybe three or so times a week - just to give him some variety and help keep his teeth clean.

So, today was the day for his first ever raw chicken wing - but to my surprise he wasn't overly keen - he would only eat it if Ian sat on the kitchen floor and held it while Roly nibbled it - every time Ian tried walking away Roly laid down and looked at it suspiciously. William (9) picked it up and offered it to Roly too and he was happy to sit and nibble it a bit more, but only while William was holding onto it.

An hour and a half later it has all gone - but only because Ian sat and held it for him. He seemed to enjoy crunching it (he likes to crunch sticks) but I was expected him to regard it as much more of a prize.

Is this about right for a first taste? Will he be more enthusiastic as he gets more confident do you think? Or is this just his overall approach to food - quite laid back and not too bothered?

Any words of wisdom appreciated.

Thank you - and sorry for the essay!! biggrin.gif

Sounds like he's not a big food guzzler. My Oliver eats his raw in a few minutes but then again he eats any food in seconds.
I'm sure someone will be along to give some good advise!

Been feeding raw for a few weeks now. At first I did hold Racer's chicken legs so he could get a good grip. He now eats them happy on his own quite quickly. Murphy on the other hand, wont let you near his bones, but eats them in his own time. His record is 3 1/2 hrs on some lamb ribs, he didn't finish them, just gave up.
Nether of mine where really fussed about dry food and rarely finished their dinner.

So I say just keep trying, you can always cut the wings into three smaller pieces, to see if that makes it easier.
