Robbie was out for an afternoon run and when he came back in he tracked blood all over the house. He has torn the toe nail off of his hind foot. ohmy.gif OUCH!! I have the bleeding stopped and he is resting.

My question is, will his toe nail grow back normally? The quick is gone completely and nothing is left. Other than infection, is there anything I need to watch for? His nails were not long as I had just trimmed.

Now I need to mop up the blood. unsure.gif

I've had a few of my Springers do this over the years and I find that the nail does grow back so far but will then split and drop off again maybe 3 or 4 times before the damaged nail bed is fully healed. So be prepared for this to happen over the next 12 months or so. Eventually a perfect nail will reform and grow and be strong enough to stay in place but depending on the severity of damage you might even find that nothing other than a small stump will take the place of a full nail.

Sandy,

Thanks for the info. I was hoping I would hear from you as you have so many pups and would probably have experienced this. There is absolutely nothing left. Kind of a hole. Poor little fella still runs around, but you can tell he walks on his foot differently. It must hurt like the devil. Springers are such brave dogs.

When the nails break off will there be a bloody mess like the original injury? Will that be painful? I'm sure he didn't bleed a lot, but it looks like a lot when it is smeared all over three rooms!! laugh.gif laugh.gif I'm glad he doesn't jump on the furniture like the others!!

They rarely bleed if they come back and then drop off on their own angell, what has happened with mine in the past is they grow back maybe 1/4" then flake away back to the nail bed, quite often they will split before dropping off and will only bleed if they catch them and tear the whole nail out again but they won't bleed as badly as when it first happened. Watch for signs of licking and limping on that paw and if you see the nail coming back and it looks like it might split or flake then carefully file or clip out any edge that could get caught to prevent the nail catching and ripping out again. The next time it will grow a bit longer as the nail becomes stronger until eventually a full strong nail grows back, like I said before this could take up to 12 months, maybe even longer. If Robbie's ripped everything out it might not even grow back at all, it just depends on the severity of damage when it first happened and this one does sound like he did a pretty good job! It will heal over but it is going to be quite sore for a few days yet, poor lad and yes each time the nail drops off it will smart a bit as he's exposing the nerve ends each time sad.gif
