Our 16 month old ESS Smudge is quivering quite badly when he's resting. Could he have a cold or could it be something more sinister? i'm probably over-reacting but he does seem a little out of sorts in the last few days. He's still eating an going to the loo! and his nose is still cold and damp.
Any advice would be great as he is our first dog and we're not too sure.
Thanks
Sharon

Does he feel cold - are his ears cold ? have you checked his gums are they nice and pink or are they pale ? if you feel he isn't well, then take him to the vets asap...

Is this after exercise and is he damp or wet? huh.gif

I only ask because when my Brodie comes back from his walk he is wet either from swimming or running through the long grass and he quivers which is just the equivalent of shivering which is normal. If it's cold, I put his hotterdog jersey on him until he is dried out. It keeps him nice and cosy.

I do hope someone more knowledgeable comes along soon to answer your question.

PS I have just been fostering a 14month old called Smudge - it's a great name for a dog. biggrin.gif

What is a hotterdog jersey they sound brill.

cath53539- 09-16-2008
It's a fleece polo neck all in one jersey.

I think lots of people who show dogs use them too.

The work by wicking the moisture away from the dogs body. If it's very cold I take one with me on my walk and when I get back to the car, I give brodie a quick towel down then pop his jersey on. It also helps keep the mess down till he dries out.

I also use it on old Hamish when we are out on walks to keep him cosy (he does not get wet), then swap them over in the car.

They are not cheap, but they last for ever and wash and tumble dry no problem. You can also use them after a bath if your dog likes drying itself on the carpet dry.gif

I got mine on ebay. Just type in hotterdog. Or go to the main Hotterdog website just in case they have a sale on.

Others might be able to give you other sources or advice on similar jerseys.

I really do recommend them for keeping a dog cosy. And I use a very macho dog t shirt for old hamish too (it is black and says Security on it) It is made of cotton so he does not get hot, but it keeps his underbelly clean on walks. We get back to the car, I whip it off, and hey presto - a clean dog (apart from the legs smile.gif )

Thanks for all your advice. he is still shivering. sad.gif he hasnt been out this morning so he isnt wet or anything. i've rung the vets and they've advised me to keep my eye on him. he seems really tired and like he cant be bothered which is completely out of character for him. i'm going to go and buy one of those hotterdog jumpers, there is a robinsons store not too far away from here to see if that helps him. If he's still the same tomorrow i'll take him to the vets. its awful to see him off colour. awww unsure.gif

Nope - sounds like he is unwell or in pain. If he is still like this in a few hours I would take him to the vet today.

Has he had any tummy problems recently or eaten anything he should not have? Has he recently had any treatments like flea or tick treatment? How are his gums and teeth?

A jersey will keep him warm but he really does sound as if he is poorly. sad.gif

He does sound ill sad.gif Has he had any jabs at all ??

cath53539- 09-16-2008
Me again- sorry

I just wanted to add the only time I have seen any of my dogs like this are when:

a. They are cold and/or wet (and that is not the case here)

b. When they are ill. I had a dog with AI disease and when he was in pain or feeling sick he would quiver and lose interest in everything.

c And finally when they are very very anxious. Two of my dogs quivered uncontrollably if they heard a firework go off - and they could be like that for hours. So stress is another factor.

I would have him checked out soon but meanwhile settle him down close beside you on a blanket and soothe him if he will allow it. That way you will hear and feel if there are any loud tummy rumbles too.

Hope he recovers soon.

Hi cath53539 can you tell me what AI disease is plz? Dont think he's eaten anything he shouldnt have and his teeth and gums look fine. we havent given him any treatments so thats why i was worried. he's fast asleep now and the shiverin seems to have calmed down but i'm defo keepin an eye on him all day. He is letting me sit beside an snuggle him and when i've been stroking him he doesnt seem to be in pain or wincing away from me.
Thanks for all your help and concern, i'll keep you up to date

oh poor little sausage. my sammy quivers sometimes, but that is when he is cold and wet, or when we're going out for walkies, he will quiver then. i would definately get the vet to check him out just to be on the safe side. sending soothing hugs to him x

Thank you every1 for all your help and advice today. we took Smudge to the vets this afternoon and he said he was running a high temperature he gave him an injection and 5 days worth of antibiotics. he's now curled up asleep in front of the fire wearing his new Hotter dog jumper.
Thanks again
Sharon, Dean & a grateful Smudge rolleyes.gif

Penel- 09-16-2008
Did they have any idea what was wrong with him ? an infection ? did they do any blood -*test*-('")s ?
Hopefully it's just a simple infection and the antibiotics will do the trick.

cath53539- 09-16-2008
Watch he does not get too warm in his jumper - in front of the fire - whilst running a temperature blink.gif laugh.gif

Seriously though, glad he is a little better but I just want to say Penel always has words of wisdom to give. If things don't improve - do not let the vet fob you off with general comments. Be specific in your questions. We will all help you out if you don't know what to ask.

Gentle hugs to Smudge.

(and he will appreciate his jumper when winter comes biggrin.gif )

Did you get a red or a black one?
