Just a quick question, at what point do puppies manage to hold themselves through the night?

I am currently putting Jasper out at 10, I get up at 2.30 am to let him out and then my husband is up just after 6 to let him out again. Just wondering how long this is likely to go on for? Because he is sleeping downstairs, we don't hear him so I am setting an alarm to get up to him, I'd hate for him to get into the routine of getting up in the night and it stick for life!

Also, do all Springers insist on you walking round the garden with them before the go to the loo or is it a puppy thing? With our greyhound we can just chuck her out and we stay in the nice warm house - getting wet at 2.30 in your dressing gown isn't much fun!! wink.gif

I don't mind any of it 'cause I love Jasper to bits, but hubby may end up divorcing me for sleep deprivation biggrin.gif

Hi
Just my opinion but I think that you are setting his routine by setting the alarm to take him out.
I never got up in the night with my two when they were pups.
I also didn't let them have loads of water late at night .
My two were crate trained though and never soiled their crate.

As for going out with him I found it was the best way to toilet train my two and used the same command every time. Mine was have a wee girls laugh.gif
They soon got used to this and it still works now at 2 and a half biggrin.gif
Sure loads of advice will be along soon.

Ghillie made enough noise when he wanted a pee to let the whole street know biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

We got up for the first few weeks and then slowly started ignoring him as it became a routine that he's want to get up for ...no not a pee but a play time session!!!

As they get older you can just send them into the garden but as a wee puppy Ghillir wanted a chaperone for his wee wees.

To be honest I think I would try him all the way through.

When we had Finn, like you we got up to let him out but the nearer it got to morning the more he seemed to want to just 'be up' and not settle.
With the pups we've had recently on foster we've left them until we get up. There were a couple of accidents occasionally in the crate but then depending on age, it's to be expected

I would agree with that.

If you get up every night at 2.30am it just becomes a normal routine which you have set and the pup may find very difficult to break (he may already!) Try stretching the time by half an hour every few days until you reach the 6am slot. But do expect a few "wee" tongue.gif accidents until he learns. wink.gif

Hi.
Is it okay to restict water over night as our puppy Max has a few accidents even though he is let out last thing at night and i am up by 6.30am. Most of the accidents are on the paper so not to bad and he is still young 9 wks, house training is going well though!

Our other pup 13 months was fairly dry overnight when we got her at 8wks so unsure if to restrict Max water intake and give last feed earlier in the evening.

thanks
jayne

Thanks for all your advice, and as suspected I think he may get into the routine of getting up in the wee hours. We have had some smelly accidents in his crate overnight which is why we started getting up to let him out. In all honesty, he is usually asleep when I go downstairs, until he hears me open his door! We did put my 'visit' to 3.00 am this morning with no adverse effects, maybe I'll try 4.00 am tonight!

We do lift his water in the evening so he doesn't have access all night.

I am also glad that it will not be forever that I have to wander around the garden in my dressing gown looking a bit of a wally! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
