Today I braved the toenail clipping saga. I need someone to hold Chase for me so I have a hope of trimming nails and as they are jet black I really only want to tip them.

So this afternoon he was lolling happily on the carpet in front of the fire firmly cuddled and he let me trim his toe nails. Imagine my horror when I made the tyke bleed TWICE blink.gif . He didn't bat an eye although I must have hurt him, then I went to trim some of his feathering and trousers and chopping one or two loose hairs you would have thought I was amputating something important!!!

Strange puppy!!!!

I remember when I first did Heathers nails......I carefully read up and looked at all the pictures and..........went and made her bleed......I felt like a real heal.....she seemed to take it in her stride rolleyes.gif I felt so bad about it for quite a while after. I didn't have any of that silver stuff either but managed to stop the bleed with a drop of glue sad.gif

Very very wary of trimming nails now.

I am absolutely phobic about trimming Duggy's nails. We hadn't had him long and I needed to cut his nails. I managed two without incident and then the third one was too close and i cut the quick. We were sitting out in the garden for grooming time and when he yelped and whimpered I felt so bad. I cried and hugged him and i'm pretty sure it hurt me more than him as he was playing 30 seconds later rolleyes.gif but I never got over it and then hid the nail clippers away. We now pay the lovely groomer up the road to do it for me biggrin.gif

blimey, being a spangles mum can be so stressful!

Thank goodness I have a friend who is a dog groomer, as i'm sure she'll give me a hand when we need to do this (is it often???) I used to have to trim my guineal pigs nails when i was a kid, that was very traumatic as i believe it it possible for the little things to bleed to death if you cut the quick - but at least their nails were clear and i could see what i was aiming to miss!

How often will depend on how quick the nails grow obviously and if you do a lot of pavement walking or soft ground walking. Ours haven't been trimmed for a while...the rate of growth may slow a bit as they get out of the puppy stage (perhaps). If clippers scare you and you still would like to keep nails trimmed a dremmel with a small sanding drum can be used, I've tried this before, the biggest hurdle to overcome is usually the noise of the thing, can make it difficult holding a wriggling springer paw as you use the thing huh.gif

A wee tip when trimming black nials, the nail will be part shiney and part dull, the dull part has no quick, just trim this part, another tip is if you drag your nail down the back of a dogs nail you will feel a click this is where you should cut, don;t worry iof they bleed just use some trimex on them
