thinning scissors, take the top knot off with single sided thinning scissors and take the back hocks etc off, hmmmm, keep on top of it until fling, then at least Mary can look at him properly, dont think its a clipping job, you just need to be more aggressive with it

Grrrr let me at him Jen biggrin.gif

Bring him down and I'll have a go wink.gif

Really don't want to clip him, ever, would rather keep him like this than clip him. Happy to leave the top knot, tis kinda cute but I'll have a bash with the rest with the thinning scissors, never occured to me to use them on his legs....

Ok Fudds I'll bring him round, watch your fingers.................. wink.gif

Have you tried a de-shedding tool like the furminator? Buddy's coat went a bit hay-wire after he had the snip and the furminator is great for sorting that out. His hair tends to go really fluffy on his head so if he scratches/rubs his head he has this punky hair-do biggrin.gif Using the de-shedding tool really brings out the colour in his coat aswell cause it gets rid of the lighter wispy stuff.
Here's a pic of Buddy the punk laugh.gif I didn't touch his hair, honest tongue.gif

furminators are basically stripping knives, they worl for fine wispy dead hair, so they are good for dogs like Lizzy's with a very fine short soft coat, but not good for dogs like Dobbie and Paddy (apart from the fine white bits at the top of paddy's back legs), Jen you have seen Paddy and Dobbies coats and also Lizzy's girls, is Marleys coat very soft like Liz's lot?

fraggle- 04-01-2008
I think its more like Paddy's, not really soft like Liz's ( not Liz herself obviously! laugh.gif ), its quite long in places.

Freya its like Paddy coat.

Mary can you use the Furminator on "done" dogs ?

Roly is starting to grow more fur - he's looking less like a sleek puppy and his liver bits have definite lighter coloured bits in, which, from reading on here, is probably fur that needs to be groomed out.

Not too sure where to start - and having a bit of history of making a long haired guinea pig too embarrassed to leave it's hutch one summer - and then the disastrous episode with my younger daughter who ended up with a fringe that went right round here head (I was egged on by her dad I hasten to add - and he knew full well what I'd done to the poor pig!! biggrin.gif )

Does anyone know if you get mobile groomers - wondering if I could find someone to come to us and show me what to do between proper hair dos to keep on top of it?

I'm sooo glad i'm not the only one with a fluffy springer biggrin.gif Benji is all curly on top of his head, and his coat is really thick, especially where it is black.
I use a comb with elastic band, which he seems to like smile.gif He hates the brush mad.gif he always wants to kill it biggrin.gif

well I use a very wide Coat King on Paddy's coat and slicker brush and comb, plus thinning scissors on his legs and feet - dont know if you paid attention to Patricks feet and legs at Selby but I had groomed him the day before coming down and he was trimmed right in to the hocks etc, I will go and take a pic of him to give you an idea of what I mean.
What Coat King are you using at the moment cos they arent all the same and if he has a Paddy coat then you will be taking the wrong coat out with the one for fine coats.

Yip you sure can,

Marls coat dousn't look like it need clipping, a good going over with a coat king or comb and elastic band, and the top knot with thinning scissors cutting in the direction of the growth, I';ll be bringing my grooming stuff to the fling so everyone can have a go tongue.gif

**Marls hides behind sofa***

Its not a proper coat king Freya, tis a copy, will measure it up tonight so I can tell you what size it is.

Thanks Mary but Marls says he's not too interested in going to the Fling anymore, he says he might have a quiet weekend in and we should just go ahead without him! laugh.gif laugh.gif

Julie and I went to some grooming classes and that along with some very helpful tution by Mary a couple of years ago has helped me to do my lot.

However the legs are the most difficult part IMHO. Not so much the feet, hocks and feathers but the wispy dead hair on the legs. It is over a very thin, non fleshy part of the leg and protrudes from the short hair so it won't really comb out.

I agree with the thinning scissors - it's the only way I've found to get it out. You can get some out with a stripping knife but not it all. Thinning sciccors and just keep working away at it.

Having said that Millies are a mess at the moment sad.gif
