my 5 year old springer wears a leather half check collar, but due to living near the beach and him playing in the sea, the chain has started to rust and irritated his skin. I have him on a half check because he does tend to pull on the lead and was a bit strong for me on just a normal collar, so I want to get him a leather slip lead, we live near a main road and just in case of an emergency that i needed to grab him quickly I leave his collar on at all times (he feels bare without it!) is a slip collar suitable for this? saw some on ebay that said they wern't?? advice and suggesstions please!!

We had the same problem with half check collars here too, we also do a lot of beach romping and no chain or metalwork associated with tags and fastenings seems up to the job. So we now have all three on padded webbing type collars with brass name tags and use rope type slips for safely walking paths or roads. Leather seems to crack when drying after being used a bit around the sea so we opted for rope instead. Mind you learn how to use them and put them on the right way round......from the "handle" end the lead should pass over your dogs neck, loop under and the slip ring should always be on the side of the dog nearest you. If you don't do it correctly there is a chance that the lead once tightened will not release sad.gif So if my description leaves doubt please try and find a picture wink.gif

The fella ive just spoke too said solid brass shouldnt rust but with the aair will tarnish so u have to clean it regularly or it will mark their coats!!

Tis true it does tarnish, the tags buff up ok though and no marks are on their coats.....yet!! biggrin.gif The alternative would be plastic. Stainless steel might be good but I haven't come across any yet.

I use these tags Linky with the nylon snap collars.

They've been in salt water often - after 18mths or so the nylon collars are starting to look a bit shabby but the Tag's are fine.

There's less "dangly stuff" on these to get caught up. I take the collars off at night or when the dogs are left home.

I use thin rope slip leads. Like a half check, the lead should be loose unless giving a soft correction - easier said than done at the start of a walk with more than one dog.

If you do a search on ST for Indigo you'll see these tags are used by a few of us.

Mmmm I like the look of the rolled half check collar and matching lead too - would be very smart for shows. Can you let us know if you are pleased with the quality when yours arrives. Thanks.
