We have a 10wk old and I really dont want her up on the sofa. At the moment when we are sitting watching tv she will jump up. I then go down to her level to stroke or play with her but when I stop she will continue to jump up. The sofa is leather and I dont want her little claws to do any damage to it. Is it the best thing is to ignore her?

What are you saying to her when she tries to jump up?? you are right to play wioth her on the floor, but I would be giving the AH AH or no command when she tries to get up

When she jumps at you the worst thing to do is start playing with her because she is demanding your attention and then you are giving it to her.

My dogs were allowed on sofas for two years and we decided to stop it about 3months ago, so now if we think they are about to jump on we say "ah ha" loud and sharply then ignore them....however if they ignore us which does sometimes happen, we just remove them from the sofa and tell them to lay on their bed (a cushion they have been taught to lay on, until we say otherwise)

Your starting off right at a young age, just be firm with her and when she is being good and not attempting to get on the sofa then you can fuss her all you like...as you have already done at her level on the floor.

Hope this helps...someone who knows their stuff will be on soon smile.gif

I would teach a 'settle' command. Pop the puppy on her lead so you can restrict her movement, give her a long lasting foodie treat like a stuffed Kong, and get her settled on her bed (she does have her own bed area close to where you are sitting doesn't she?) Then use your foot on her lead to restrict her, gently reward and praise her when she is settled on her bed and quiet.

Personally, I wouldn't speak to her, but just use the lead to reposition her.

I'm bad, mine are aloud on the sofa's but will get off when told to. If visiting dogs aren't aloud on sofas at home, I'm strict and keep them off. But I've yet to stop any dog getting on the sofa when I leave the room!!! biggrin.gif

If dogs try that aren't aloud normal a firm ah ah or no stops them, otherwise their pushed off.

We give the no command when she jumps up to the sofa. I did then go to her level to play, now its going to be ignore until she stops.

I've given up now at the moment the cat is asleep in my computer chair Ringo is asleep on the sofa (there's no room for any on else) and Stig is in the armchair. I am reduced to an old wooden stool to use at the computer biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

My dogs are never allowed on my sofa.

They have their own four seater leather one with fur throws on the other side of the room. laugh.gif

Bailey is very demanding of attention, she will go from OH to me and back again trying to get a cuddle, and will jump up when not invited, unlike Tess, who will wait to be asked. We are firm and tell her no and off until she gives up, but despite having a lovely bed, she will then either go and jam herself between the TV Cabinet and the fireplace, or take up position on the 2 seater on the other side of the room.

Wish we'd gone with the no sofa option from a pup, but she is such a cuddle monster, seemed a shame!

She is, however, very good at not jumping up if we are eating, although she did spill a coffee over a visitor the other night, I'd only just met him too... OH of someone hubby works with. Good job they are doggy people!!

I have to say the 'ignoring' is definitely is working. Tries it now and just walks away.
