My dog Abby has broken her elbow and is undergoing surgery to correct it. I have been told that this may be due to her having IOHC (Incomplete Ossification of the Humeral Condyle). She is only six months old and i dont know how this will effect her long term. Has anyone got a dog with this condition? My vet says Springers are pre disposed for IOHC.

My Molly broke her elbow 10 days ago sad.gif the vet told me that it was a pre-disposed condition known well in springers!!She has had two operations since sad.gif the second one was by a specialist, they were worried about getting the right alignment so that her bones would heal properly, and hopefully reducing the risk of arthritis in later life. She now has a screw and a pin in her elbow joint.May need another op. later to take the pin out! This is because she is only 4 mths old and her bones will grow sad.gif

Thinking of you at this worrying time

Well Abby has had her elbow pinned back together friday before last and came home on the following monday. Her vet says that she did have IOHC in the elbow that she broke but dose not have it in the other one (thank God). Now i am just stressed out trying to keep her as still as pos which i am sure everyone reading this knows is near imposible, (six month old springers arn't suppost to be still even for a second!). She has the stiches out this coming friday hopfully she hasn'e done any damage bouncing around!! huh.gif
Thank you for your comments.

Hope abby and yourself are okies............i know only too well what you are going through...my max had a op on his back knee( the knee ball kept coming out the socket) and they put a pin in this also...that was 4 weeks today....and its been mad trying to keep him calm has he is only 10mths old...having a 6 mth old also doesnt help has they both want to play....after 2 weeks max had his stiches out and i spoke too the vet regarding excercise...he said lead walk only, week later we was back and he is doing just great.....now runs around like a mad 10mth old springer does...i try to keep to flat land hence where theres no jumping involved....we have been going to the beach quite alot...swimming and salt water has done his knee and wound a world of good ( so the vet tells me) so maybe you can try these things also...kept me stress free and also max.

hope this helps

This is why it is advisable to get a puppy only from health -*test*-('")ed parents.

I hope your puppy recovers ok.

Abby had been doig very well, she had her stiches out yesterday. However i got home today and she is not putting any weight on her leg again bad news. I have ended up taking her back to Fitzpatricks this evening she is staying there, he says she has ether fractured it again or has an infection, xray tomorrow will tell us more fingures crossed. She is not a happy bunny, nor am i. I feel bad that i counldn't keep her more still.
Thank you for all you messages,

Hi, I take it Fitzpatricks is a vet/hospital? Iv'e asked my vet for revolving doors laugh.gif Molly had an abcess in her leg, next to the scar, we didn't notice until, like Abby she couldn't put any weight on it. Hopefully it will be an infection rather than a fracture, easier treated with antibiotics. When will you get any news? Please keep us posted. If you like you can PM me. They worry us so much don't they rolleyes.gif It's the waiting thats the worst, were now waiting for results of her culture to come back unsure.gif
Don't blame yourself S*** happens, we can't be there 24/7

Hi Meghan, sorry to hear Abby isn't too great at the mo. Have you tried keeping her in a crate? It may seem harsh, but its pretty much the only way you can be sure there is no running/jumping around like a loon!

Hi Meghan, so sorry to hear about Abbey sad.gif
My Obi is having an xray next week to check for the same condition, his dad had it and is doing very well after the surgery. It wasn't known at the time of mating him to Obi's mum that he had it sad.gif
Obi is mildly lame on his right foreleg so I am very worried, but the orthopaedic vet is away until next week.
I hope that Abbey is ok and can come home soon. <<Healing>> vibes being sent for her.
