Jago has been booked in to have his hips scored this coming Monday. Believe it or not, I am getting nervous as the day gets closer. Then I've got to wait for the X-rays to be sent to the examining board and scored.

I'll be gibbering wreck come the end of this. unsure.gif unsure.gif

Do any of you get twitchy over hip score -*test*-('")ing?

Are you worried about the result or the stress it may cause Jago?

SteveL- 08-27-2008
Both!!

Worried 'cause he has got to have a GA and you are never 100% guaranteed they won't have a reaction. Forget the results as long as he is OK.

But then after that there is the delay for the results.

Now your making me feel bad, because I didn't worry about Racer, His breeder took him and I didn't think about it. So I'll think about Jago instead and send him positive thoughts, I'm sure he'll be fine. tongue.gif

Thanks Sue.

I always worry where GA's are concerned , not that any of my dogs have had any problems. It's just that slight risk and the fear that one is exposing them to that risk for a -*test*-('") rather than an illness.

Just shows how much you care for Jago and the others Steve, I'm a wreck when any of ours go in for anything.

Fingers crossed for Jago and I hope the sores are good.

Better get your self off to the pub for a good stiffener Steve wink.gif

I am always keen to learn.

How do they do a hip score and why is a GA required? blink.gif

An x-ray of the hips has to be taken and this can be done either under sedation or under a GA. Most vets will use a GA as it is easier to get a good x-ray but there are some skilled enought o do the x-ray under sedation only.

The quality of the x-ray has to be as high as possible because it is sent of to a board of experts who look at the x-ray and "score" the hips. They are looking for faults, bone malformation etc..

The reason for hip scoring is to enable breeders to only breed from parents with hip scores better than the breed average. The intention is to produce pups that will have a better chance of not having Hip dysplasia.

That's the theory anyhow.

The wait will be agony Steve, but he'll soon be back home again and then the wait start's all over again, will be thinking of you.

I do try not to worry about mine if GA is involved, they are all fit and healthy and unless they are very unlucky should be OK, I always worry if it's Oll's but he's an old man so more of a risk. sad.gif

All the best for Jago then. I understand your worries too. In fact Fippy was due to have an x-ray and since it wasn't really necessary I cancelled the apponitment huh.gif .

Do I remeber correctly that Clumbers have a HD problem more than other breeds? What is the average hip score in Clumbers?? What hipscore did his parents have (if you don't mind me asking unsure.gif )? I just find it an intersting subject.

GA's are supposed to be a lot better nowadays than they used to be. They have to have the GA because the hips have to be manipulated to show the joint in the most clear position, and this can be uncomfortable I assume......

I'm sure he'll be fine - he's got plenty of muscle to support a joint it it should prove to be weak, and I'm sure you've chosen the breeder very carefully.

I fret with the best over GA's but he won't be under for a huge amount of time will he ?

Sue, recomended something but it escapes me now, to get over a GA.

Will be pacing with you Steve and big pre GA for Jago x

Average hip score for Clumbers is a devastatingly high 40. I will not let Jago cover a bitch if his score is higher than 20.

I would not want the responsibility of pups with hip dysplacia so I would err on the side of safety.

His parents were 12 for the sire and 13 with the dam and fairly equal both sides

That's well below Clumber average and quite a good score really anyway. Fipps' mum was 9 and dad 25 rolleyes.gif
