He is good when you say sit or lie down, but he wont stay there. When i feed him i make him stay in sit until i put the bowl down. This is the only time he seems to do it and even then he is literally trembling all over with excitment!
I try stay and then take a step back and give him a treat but most times he loses the plot.
I take him to puppy school but most of the time he is more interested in finding the treats the other dogs have dropped and cant concentrate.
Any hints would be good.
It would be nice if he stayed when i walked from one room to another but no way!

You can practice the 'stay' at home, make the dog sit and hold up your hand and say 'stay' then walk backwards holding your hand up, if your dog moves go over and put him back on the same spot and say 'stay' I'm sure if you do this enough times he will soon get the hang of it.

I remember once I put Holly's dinner down and forgot to tell her to 'fetch up' and I went upstairs put all the ironing away and had a tidy up and when I came down she was still sitting there waiting surrounded by a pile of 'drool' ohmy.gif laugh.gif

I agree with Jackie21, do it home when there are no other distractions. When you start don't move to far away, sit him directly infront of you and try and take a couple of steps back, then gradually increase the distance and length of time.

If he is too excitable and he moves as soon as you do, you could try putting him in a sit in the heel position crouch down next to him gently hold his collar and with a toy that DOESN'T roll toss it a little way in front, tell him to stay and hold him if necessary then use something like "go on" and release his collar, just until he gets the hang of what he should be doing.

By the way, i have to use the "wait" with angel as she confuses stay with play!!

Good luck!

i have been practicing two minute stays with Stellar (Rufus has it sussed) - i tell her to sit and show her a small piece of sausage or cheese - then i say 'stay' and i walk to the other end of the room (though you can start with much shorter distances and times and gradually increase) if she looks a little distracted then I ask her to 'watch me' and point to my eyes - reinforcing 'stay' again - She's doing pretty well now smile.gif

(if she does get up, she gets plonked back where she started (without saying anything) - and we try the whole procedure again)

Good luck - let us know how you do

I agree with the posts above. Loads of ways to crack a nut, but I’d have ago with putting a small mat/rug on the floor and get him to stay on that. If he breaks the stay, you then put him back in the right place.
I use “wait” when I’m going to release from a distance. “Stay” when I’m going back to them. I’m not fussed if they sit or lie down – I’m not looking for a KC rosette!
If you’ve “killed” the stay command, I’d take a few days off then start afresh with a different word.

I didn't know springers could stay! ohmy.gif

My labrador learnt stay easily, no problems, Racer can't keep his bottom still. He'll sit and sort of stay, but his bottom wiggles with excitment and slowly he makes his way across the floor!!!

I have tried, Labs are easier to train, apart from recall where Racer wins hands down everytime.
