Just a mild panic and plea for advice because Tilly's coat has started changing (now 3 months after her spay) and I've realised I haven't a clue how to deal with it.
I thought I knew what stripping was but now I've realised Tilly never really had any fluff before - just used to pull out the odd wispy strand above her ears occasionally.
Now the fluffy gingery undercoat is growing like mad and starting to get longer than her top coat, and I'm pretty sure the same is happening with the white parts of her coat only it's harder to tell with it all being white.
It doesn't look too bad yet because it's only just peeping out over her normal coat but in bright sunlight it is obvious - wiggly little strands sticking out all over.
I've been trying to keep on top of it by going over it with a spaniel comb each day - and it does pull a lot of the fluffy stuff out but there's no way I can keep up with the rate it's appearing. Selina suggested a coarse stripping knife to me a while ago so I have got that plus a Coat King - is this the time I need to start using those and will they do the job? (I can't believe anything could actually deal with all that fluff - it's growing all over her body and for some reason I expected it to just be certain areas rolleyes.gif ... silly me!)

Get that stripping knife out, I think I've been really lucky with Rufus cause he still hasn't gone fluffy, only his ears get it to be honest, I'm sure mary will be along soon, she's teh grooming expert, other than that I'll happily pass you my groomer's phone number, she is brilliant with welshie coats and has lots of welshie experience, she's miles away from you but may be able to advise over the phone, just say I suggested ringing her smile.gif

Poppys coat went beserko after her spey - she turned into a fluff ball overnight

We clipped her so she's nice and sleek now - even her ears are clipped short - looks much nicer.

Thanks Selina, may well take you up on that!

Don't clip Tilly's coat, that's the worst thing you can do to a Welshie, it's a completely different coat to an ESS as I'm sure youalready know, perservere with the stripping knife the other thing you can use which works equally as well is a normal grooming comb with an elastic band wound in and out of the teeth, the dead hair sticks to it and gets pulled away easier without ruining the coat. smile.gif

I prefer to use a stripping stone, I dont hand strip a dog which has been spayed, simply because the coat does change and it can be painful to the dog if the coat has become very fluffy.you can get a way with hand stripping if the coat is still fine, but I have had to clip Mason, because he looked like a burst couch

No I won't clip her - hoping that won't be necessary.
The way the hair is at the moment it's only really fine fluff growing from underneath and is emerging like a 'halo' around the normal fur (sorry can't explain very well - will perhaps be better to take a picture but the sun has gone away rolleyes.gif). The original outer coat is still there and still flat and smooth and shiny.
I'd forgotten about the elastic in the comb thing - tried it pre-spay and wondered what it was for ... now I can see it might be something to try! tongue.gif
I stopped panicking last night and had a good go at defluffing with the various tools I have and it did work but took a while. Hope I'm not hurting Tilly. She doesn't seem to bother for a while when I'm pulling fluff out, then sooner or later she gives me a 'look' as if to say "fed up now" and rolls over and hides the bit I'm working on sad.gif so we stop for a bit. Would I be able to tell if I was hurting her? She's a very 'kind' dog - I worry she might put up with quite a lot from me without pro-*test*-('")ing.

Hi Mary. smile.gif Would the stripping stone be equivalent to a stripping knife or Coat King or is it different altogether? And what counts as hand stripping and what doesn't? (Getting myself all confused now!)
If any of the methods that pull the fluff out become too uncomfortable for Tilly would I be able to do anything perhaps with scissors rather than clip? It's really annoying because her outer coat is more or less the same so don't really want to touch that - it's just the pesky fluff invading from below needs disciplining. biggrin.gif

I'm so pleased i've found this site.
My 8yo es chelsea was apparently clipped in jan 07and speyed a while before that. Her coat from behind her ears to her tail is pure fluff. Her legs head, ears and belly are 'normal' hair.
When i got her in sept 07, she was quite 'chubby' and very hairy and matted in the usual springer places. Little and often i have got her looking more like a springer than a collie/sheep. Her ears join at the top with a few silky black curls. Get the picture?
I dont intend using clippers on her but am interested in the stripping knife/comb. Will it leave lines in her coat if i dont use it properly. Her roots are quite strong so dont want to pluck her, cant afford to have her done proffessionaly. Any advice would be great.
I use a small plastic curry comb (designed for horses), have always used one on my dogs, they love it. I also use mane and tail conditioner on the knotted bits and when she is groomed thoroughly i give her a spray all over. This helps the mud NOT to stick and makes grooming easier. I use scissors on her feet, lower feathers and tail.
What other brushes are out there which spaniel owners swear buy, coz i dont believe in lots of stuff which all does the same job.
Thanks, ps if i post stuff in the wrong place will someone please shout at me, coz i'm not very logic sometimes.

selina- 12-11-2007
Rainie the stripping knife and stone doesn't leave lines at all, so you've got nothing to worry about, go ahead get one and dive straight in. smile.gif

stripping knife...stripping stone...Coat King...clippers...this is more or less gobbledygook to me wacko.gif but I better get familiar with it as Fipps' spaying is two months ago. Is the Coat King a stripping knife??? As this is what I thought of buying.

This is what i'm using on Braan as he is really fluffy from half way down the body down wards - would it be better to get a coat king or shall I just continue with this?

Sorry to butt in on your post ph34r.gif
