I ed Oliver at lunch time some organs (kidneys, heart and liver) with an egg. He has been lying under the table most of the afternoon and then went in the garden and threw up his dinner. Before i could get to him he then ate his vomit up.
Im really worried now as i dont want to make him ill with this.
Im tempted to give kibble for dinner as i dont want this happening again!
Can someone give me some advise on this?

To be honest I wouldn't worry too much about it. Liver, kidney etc is quite rich and as he is not used to raw that much, I'm not so surprised he threw it up. Maybe it's better to mix offal with muscle meat. I'm sure it doesn't make him ill.

Hope Sandy will be along as she is the expert in all this smile.gif

This happened to Daisy when she first started, could be he's eaten it too fast.

She's not had a repeat since, and now eats it all fine. Like Christine said, maybe not so much rich stuff in one go might help too.

Don't worry - keep the faith!!

he is just lying in his bed and he normally wags his whole body when he sees me.
I'll keep an eye on him and with hold food for a while and see if he perks up

I'm not up on BARF, I only feed raw bones at mo, as just starting my lot on it (Not every meal we are transferring slowly)

Hope he perks up soon smile.gif

I agree with Christine, together with the egg it sounds a bit rich for a dog not used to these things. Or he was being greedy and ate too fast..... ph34r.gif

Go slowly and don't introduce too many new things all at once. Some dogs can handle it, others need a bit of time to adjust. rolleyes.gif

He ate it in less than a minute and it looked like he hadnt chewed it when it came up. Should i introduce one food at a time, or give smaller portions (he had 200gms of offal)

cazza- 06-26-2008
I'm introducing one food at a time - but I'm not sure if that is right

I just started with chicken wings and then progressed on to ribs

I remember someone telling me that some dogs have an intolerance to certain foods just like some humans, hence I'm doing one food at a time smile.gif

I find with Lily that too much offal in one go is too rich for her. Although she isn't sick with it she gets very runny poos. I find that I feel just a little bit of offal at a number of meals through the week (meat with bone meals) that she can take it then.

Agree with everyone else that maybe it was just too much offal for him.

How old is he?

he is nearly 7 months and weighs between 12 and 13 kg. Do you thuink 200gms of offal too much?

The general advise is 10-20% offal of the overall food intake, so 200g is fine if it is once a week or in your case spread over maybe three days. I think you give him 400g food/day, don't you? He could have even a bit more offal then.

Sorry, but I have this funny image in my head, that your pup thinks 'this is great grub', waggs his tail and happily gulps down everything as quick as he can hoping for more, in the same time you're sick of worry, tearing your hair out over all this laugh.gif laugh.gif Hope you both get into a settled routine soon. I don't do things anymore exactly as when I started raw, it's a learning curve. Just don't give up.

you are exactly right, he loves the food but doesnt stop to breath. I am worrying constantly that i am going to end up killing him with the diet. I am keeping on with it because all his diarhhea has stopped since coming off kibble.
He is learning fast as he doesnt sit by the old food cupboard any more but in front of the fridge.
For some reason he doesnt try to eat his own poo anymore. Not sure if the new food has done this but that in itself is an improvement.
Mind you my main worry tonight is checking he is ok as my son accidentally hit him on the head with a golf ball when they were playing in the garden!!!!!!!!!

Ok I started about hmm almost two weeks ago with hendrix on barf.... I would suggest cutting them up a lot smaller.... He has about 1 inch cubes... of anything but bones... I also found that rich foods like liver and what not... I would give two feedings a day with.. usually only gets fed once a day... and when I would do this I'd only use half of each... and mix with w/e meats that he likes... this way hes getting the food but its easy on his tummy... hope I helped yah out some.

I remember a post just like yours when I first started feeding my two raw coming up to 2 years ago.Dottie did exactly the same so I came on here and got some great advice from sandy.
Offal with egg....power food laugh.gif I think sandy calls it lol (sandy correct me if i'm wrong)is prob a bit much to soon when you start out raw feeding.
My two have this once a week but they are veterans now and will eat anything lol
If I were you I would get him eating raw Chicken/ pork / lamb with soft bone in and leave the offal for a few weeks.
Don't worry about him throwing his food back up and eating it again this is undigested food that has been ate too quickly second time around he may eat it slower.

Eating raw is quite exciting for them and if you are anything like me for us as well.I loved watching my 2 eating raw when I started feeding. I overfed my two terrible when I first started feeding and dottie was throwing it back up and eating it again regularly. I remember feeding dottie a whole mackeral because i thought she should eat fish lol she was 5 months old and she just swallowed it 5 mins later it landed on my carpet lol Its a learning curve and it does get easier and becomes as easy has pouring kibble into a bowel after a while.

if it wasnt for this site i would be giving him kibble now. Today he had chicken thigh and ate it much slower than before (although quicker than i could manage it LOL). He had minced lamb with bone in as well and does seem to be doing fine. I have been tempted to feed him too much because he eats it all so quickly but i could give him double and he would still be begging for more.
