Hi all,
I was just wondering how many people bought their pups from health -*test*-('")ed parents?

If I was buying a lab puppy or smilar breed I would make sure the parents had all the health checks with good results but honestly it never occured to me for a springer.
Obi was kind of a gift (best one I ever got tongue.gif ) and I wouldn't change him for the world obviously, but I wonder if I had been looking to actually buy a pup I would have looked for health -*test*-('")ed parents.
So how many breeders do health -*test*-('"), and what do they -*test*-('") for?
Thanks for any input smile.gif

DNA Screening - FUCO English Springer Spaniel

Please remember that not all breeders -*test*-('") ............... and not all breeders submit the results of -*test*-('")ed dogs to the relevant breed club or the kennel club! wink.gif

and in view of the increasing number of ESS with HD I would be looking for hip scored parents.

There may be other things but I'm not an expert.

The recognised WSS health issues are
Glaucoma - eye -*test*-('") is a simple affected or unaffected
Hips - breed av is 20 and mean is 16, ideally both parents are below these
Epilepsy - no -*test*-('") so it is a gamble, but pedigrees can give an indication of likelyhood. I would ask at a minimum that the parents and their siblings were not affected, but no one seems to do that these days. The WSSC publishes (in the Year Book) details of those affected and their parents (48 in the last 20 years). Most breeders go way back further in pedigrees, to determine the odds - hard to do for sure as we do not yet even know how many genes are involved. Most of us contact the health group if we are planning a mating just to check that there are no pending cases going through the process behind the dogs we are thinking of using (and our bitches).
