malackey- 08-29-2008
Hiya

I picked up Malackey last night we have had a few walks now and he is a big time puller on the lead ive read and sounds like a springer thing. He come with a dogmatic im guessing like a halti but i dont think it fits him very well as his lips seem a bit odd when its on him and he really doesnt like it sad.gif What do you all suggest a halti that may fit better?or a harness of some sort?

Thanks

i used to use harnesses for my sam, but i found he pulled even more with them on!!! i used a stop-pull harness too, which ripped him to shreds between his shoulder blades and under his arms sad.gif

now i use a gencon or gentle leader. with both he walks perfect!!!

i have also been teaching him to loose lead walk with just a normal slip lead and its going really well. have been teaching it using my clicker. can walk down the road at least 10 paces now without any pulling!

good luck with whatever you choose for him, but make sure it fits him perfectly otherwise he'll hate it even more!

Dito with Racer, I know use a gentle leader, Halti's didn't fit right.

Angel had a halti, she would still try and pull and as the lead clipped under the chin it pulled her face up to one side. i know use a canny collar www.cannycollar.co.uk it works on the same principal but the lead clips on to the back of the collar. Many members seem to use harnesses with no problems, though i haven't used one.

The thing is, it is trial and error (therefore can work out expensive!), what suits 1 dog/owner won't necessarily suit another. I think whatever you decide to try as springergirl says is the correct fit, too small it will be uncomfortable for the dog and too big it can equally be uncomfortable and ineffective.

QVC online often sell dog stuff - the reason i mention it is they usually have a brilliant returns policy.

good luck

Sam and Angel

We have also found the gencon that springergirl mentions to work well and fits nicely on both our dogs because it is adjustable... Not bad value from ebay either, I think I got 2 which are gencon and lead combined for £30 inc posting.

I have 2 dogs

1 has a halti and the other has a harness.

With my 2 the harness works with 1 but if I put it on the other he pulls even more.

trial and error ...I'd say

we tried the halti but Bella hated it so now we use the Sensible harness, clip fastens in front so she cant pull easily also pulls her around if she decides to lunge at sone unfortunate passing us. Used an ordinary harness fora while too and she pulled like a steam train-really is trial and error

Training wink.gif but until then I'd use the Cannie Collar, tried them all and this was the best. It clips to the back of the neck and you can train with it too.
