helo i am new to this forum, later on tonight i am picking up a 2 year old castrated male he is a pedigree just without papers, i have been looking forward to gettin a springer, i was after a jack russel until a good friend of mine persuaded me to get a springer and i have since fallen in love with them, i am looking forward to being able to have fun with him and take him out for walks.
the dog will hopefully do abit of beating and maybe a little rough shooting, but other than that he is a pet.
i just wank to know what shall i look for in his behaviour and bad habbits.
any advice is gratefully appreciated.
its all new to me,
many thanks

hello there - don't despair, a lot of the forum peeps are away this week smile.gif

bad habits eh? where do i start laugh.gif

no seriously....

it is important to keep them mentally stimulated aswell as physically (bored springers destroy things )

- they can be stubborn so you need to make sure they know you are in charge...

so how are you getting on? any pics of the new arrival? What's his/her name?

Hi Jazz, welcome to the site, like Polly says an awful lot of the regulars are away at the spring fling this week.

One thing I can say is there is never a dull moment with a springer around, and be warned photos are compulsory on ST wink.gif otherwise everyone will suddenly get a bad cough tongue.gif

As for bad habits well, Ive got one boy that goes deaf on a regular basis and who is a master counter-surfer, another that just cant help himself when there is water or a ball around and is a bin raider and a girl who feels she has to 'shout' at people, dogs or objects, usually when Im least expecting it too rolleyes.gif She also thinks shes a lapdog, which at 26kg and 20" high at the shoulder is not ideal when you're trying to watch the telly blink.gif

Seriously have a good look through the springer chat section, reading some of the posts in there will give you a good idea of some of the problems/bad habits that springers can have. Good luck with your new additon, whats his name?

jazz_11- 08-16-2008
well he is lovely, really playful, his recall is goosd and he is good on the dog whistle.
his name is jake.
he is sleeping indoors until i get a kennel sorted.
do you keep yours in or out?
i will try and get a pic up as soon as possible.

well it sounds like you are off to a good start with Jake then smile.gif

My two sleep indoors in the kitchen, we were going to kennel them outdoors, but it never kind of happened laugh.gif

oh another thing they tend to be rubbish at is walking to heel - it takes a lot of training to curb that springer enthusiasm smile.gif

- but they really are the happiest, swee-*test*-('") natured little souls - they are intelligent, and soon start to understand words and phrases - and pre-empt routines - and the expressions they can pull are just wonderful,

H, can't wait to see pictures tongue.gif

Our 2 used to be indoor dogs but moved out into their kennel earlier this year and they both love it.

Advice .... start as you mean to go on, be consistent, and if you give them an inch they'll take a mile. Take everything at their pace, however tempting don't compare them to what other dogs can do, and don't rush any training. But most important .... enjoy them biggrin.gif

awww so pleased you found us, this site is full of people with the experience to help you, i for one am not one of them lol as my Harry is just a family pet and not a working springer so i have no idea about any of that side of keeping a springer but plenty here do and when they return they will be here to answer your questions i'm sure, now go get some pics sorted (unless you have an i havent seen them yet lol)

Have fun
hugs

laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif lol, that is soooo true, and you're a very good example of that SM wink.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif . Ours sleep indoors, Holley likes her bed out in the hallway, Griffon likes to sleep in the corner under the bay window (there is a cosy little nook there that is just for him) and Merlin likes to settle on the floor next to my side of the bed altho he does tend to wander back and forth between the other two at night

Looking forward to seeing pictures of Jake wub.gif

Hello, and a very warm welcome!!

Bad behaviour, um, anything to do with nicking food or digging plants out of the garden, at my mum's today Bailey proudly brought us a lavender bush, complete with root ball, bless!

They are very trainable, in my humble opinion, if you put the work in, they want to please but are easily bored, and will exploit any signs of weakness!!! But they are completely LUSH!!!!!
