What do you feed your foster dog? I'm waiting to be home checked and fingers crossed if all goes well will be fostering. But round about the same time i'll be switching my two to raw and was wondering what do i feed the foster dog? It doesn't seem fair giving my two all the goodies and feeding the foster kibble, but if i start the foster on raw and it get's a new home the poor dog will most likely have to go back to kibble.
I know there's a few on here who foster and wondered what you do. Obviously if the rescue want the foster to stay on kibble i'll do as they wish. Also the places where you foster from - how do they feel about you feeding raw to a foster? (if you do)

Must admit I've tended to keep the foster dogs on kibble or whatever they are used to if I can. Usually only fostered for a couple of weeks at a time although have had two of the fosters for over a month.

Not fostered myself since changing over to raw but I am sure that when Selina fosters she does one meal raw and one meal kibble, that way the new owners then have the choice of what they feed them. Sure there will be more along to answer you.

Good luck with the fostering its can be real hard on the emotions but soooooooooooo worthwile biggrin.gif

Currently fostering my first.

Fed entirely on dry food for the last 4 years but you should see her when the chicken wings appear. Her eyes are huge and pleading.

So she is getting raw and her dry food. No problems so far.

But I can remember reading this might cause digestive problems so advice would be appreciated here too.

Kibble and raw digest at diff rates, it;s ok if you feed raw at 1 meal and kibble for next, but not together, sandy will be able to explain further. I give my fosters kibble with the odd chicken wing too smile.gif

I feed kibble in the morning and raw in the evening and have no problems at all. I do not feed them together, but I know some mushers do without problems. I don't worry overmuch on different digestion times - not every raw meal spends the same amount of time in the stomach either. rolleyes.gif

I personally think you should stick to the food your foster is likely to be fed at it's new home as the new owner could find the dog doesn't want to eat kibble once it's been fed raw or it might go back on kibble after eating raw and then get a bad tummy which happens a lot from raw back to kibble but not from kibble to raw, if you get my meaning. By all means give it a raw treat if you want to or if you do want to give a meal of each make it one raw morning and one kibble evening feed.

I'm on a 24 hours foster only sad.gif Else they might have to prise the dog away from me cos I'll be kicking and screaming, I can't ever let them go again...........rubbish I am at fostering sad.gif

It's different when I've got dogs here on holiday, we've got Archie the working Cocker arriving at the end of the month for about 3 weeks, I shall be waving him off no problemo after that length of time laugh.gif Holiday dogs are different, I suppose it's because they have got a great home anyway but the little ones that come in for fostering, well nobody loves them do they and that's why a lot of them end up in rescue sad.gif

Sandy, you're the only banned fosterer I know, but deinitely one of the best laugh.gif

Karen's right I feed raw one day and kibble the next so that the owner has a choice and doesn't feel pressured into anything they don't want to do, when i feed kibble the foster has it in the kitchen while my dog's get the raw outside that way they don't feel left out smile.gif

Sandy I think I;ll join you in the banned fosters club laugh.gif laugh.gif I want to keep everyone laugh.gif

Well i had my home check and all went well, then today my landlord has had a change of heart and now says that he doesn't want another dog on the property I am so damn mad one minute its fine the next it's not mad.gif i wouldn't mind but i have a huge garden and the house isn't small either (it's not huge either, but by no means small) one more dog wouldn't make any difference to the garden or the property they know i keep the house in order and they have no good reason to say no. I tried talking to them but there's just no talking to some people.
They knew i was being home checked and let me go ahead with it and now they drop this on me mad.gif I really feel like they've just been messing me around, i've had to get in touch with GSD rescue and tell them that i won't be able to foster and i feel awful that i've messed them around. And what would have happened if a dog had already come to me that poor animal would have been moved out of kennels only to be taken back in - there was a dog that i was going to foster he's 9 years old and i just wanted to get him out of kennels cause he's been in there a while and the worst part is i feel like i've let him down too. I had to email the rescue (instead of calling) cause i was just so damn mad and wound up - still am mad.gif mad.gif mad.gif

I'm hoping to move house as soon as i can find somewhere suitable, which isn't easy around here, so i will be getting back in touch with them.

I'm REALLY not happy
