Many of you may have heard from the media that Gordon Brown has been calling people that have sent him emails and letters to discuss further the issues they have. A spokesman said that the majority of the correspondence he gets is quite abusive, in which case, quite understandably he does not reply. However, he is always open to listening to the public especially if they can put forward workable solutions to the problems they are highlighting.

This is our chance to be heard - 100 emails sent on the same day will have much more impact than 200 arriving during the course of a month - Gordon Brown will know we are organised, serious, and, above all, we want him to listen.
They are asking us to send the email I have attached below on Fri 6th Jun. If you have time it would be really great if you could send it to any of your animal lover friends to send on as well.
Lots of love
Joyce and Ellie xx

For the attention of: Gordon Brown
Prime Minister

Dear Mr Brown

I wish to voice my concerns about Puppy Farming/commercial breeding that has always been lacking in high animal welfare standards with multi breed dogs being bred indiscriminately and being sold to large pet stores throughout the country.

Despite the introduction of The Animal Welfare Act 2006, this unscrupulous trade continues and sadly the amount of animals suffering in terrible living conditions is rising. The ‘puppy farms’ are churning out thousands of sick and dying puppies every week and the consumer is faced with agonising decisions as the breeders refuse to take them back, or they emotionally blackmail the consumer by telling them the puppy will be destroyed.

One positive step forward is to ban the sale of dogs via the internet and pet shops. There are many websites dedicated to the sale of puppies such as Epupz. Despite Epupz stating that they regulate their site, by their own admission they can not guarantee that the puppies sold are not from illegal breeders. The majority of advertisers using the internet as a shop front are not reputable breeders, in fact the very opposite, they are illegal puppy farm breeders who keep their dogs in appalling conditions. The breeding bitches are kept in cramped squalid conditions such as cages so small they can not move in, dark sheds, the backs of abandoned cars and trailers in searing temperatures, very often alongside siblings which have long since died of starvation, dehydration and disease. Reputable breeders do not need to advertise their puppies on websites or sell them in pet shops, as they will usually have long waiting lists of carefully vetted potential owners. On viewing the Epupz website today, there are 19,476 puppies advertised for sale. There are simply not enough reputable breeders in the UK to produce this staggering amount of puppies.

I would estimate that the average breeding bitch would have eight litters of around eight puppies per litter. With a retail value of approximately £550 that is revenue of £35,200 per dog. Most puppy farmers keep around 50 dogs at a time to breed from, giving them a staggering income of £1,760,000 of which they pay not a penny in tax.

I would urge you to consider the ban of pet shop and internet sales and help put a stop to the misery of the dogs, puppies, unsuspecting consumers and the profiteering of an illegal trade.

Thank you for taking the time to read this email, I look forward to your reply
