Not a springer but a beautiful greyhound. I have phoned th dog warden and left a message, is there anyone else I should contact?

I think you have done the right thing. Perhaps you should call the local police station too as the warden was not there.
You could also try http://www.doglost.co.uk/page.aspx?pg=83 to see if there is a greyhound missing in your area.

Thank you sea pigeon, just reported to the local police station. Will keep an eye on dog lost.

Thanks

I thought the police didn't have responsibility for stray dogs any more?

Just phoned dog warden, they said, they went out to look, but couldn't fine him/her, and there have been no calls from an owner of a lost dog. Hopefully it has been reunited. It did have a collar on, which is a good sign smile.gif

Hi digger, I phoned the police and they took down all the details. They didn't say If it was there responsibility or not. The phone number was an area number, not a direct one to the station nearest me, but they said they would pass on the details to the local one. perhaps it depends what area you live in. Mind you it was in the middle of the road so I guess they would have to take interest.

did you take the dog in or is it still loose on the road, the first thing to do is to get it off the road and safe, I dont know if this still correct but it used to be if you took a stray dog to the police they have to take responsibility for kenneling as a loose dog on the road is construed as a danger to traffic.

no I didn't manage to get him. He did stop for a wee near to me and I got near his collar but he ran off. Someone else made a 'grab' for him which made him run faster and a bit more irratic. sad.gif

God I hope my post didn't sound nasty - I wasn't implying anything about catching the dog - its just the way it came out.

Years ago my OH was on his way back across the M62 from Manchester to York where we used to live, he was on the motorbike, late at night, and had pulled off at a slip road to stop and have a pee.

A collie came running upto him, bear in mind he was at the side of a motorway, and not knowing what to do as he couldn't leave the dog he was about to call the police when a police car pulled up alongside him - they actually came across and asked him if it was his dog - he was on a motorbike for godsake, he told them no and explained he was about to ring them as he was worried about the dog running onto the motorway - they wanted to just leave the dog and see what happened - my OH kicked up a fuss, stating that it was bad enough if a car hit the dog let alone if a motorcyclist hit it, not only would it kill the dog but could quite easily cause a bad accident - only then did they agree to put the dog in the car and take it back to the station.

what more do I need to say?

Apart from the safety aspect perhaps the owner would report the dog mssing to the police. Worth a try. smile.gif

As far as I know they don't officially have a responsibility for the stray dog but if it (or any animal) is on a busy road where it is likely to cause an accident they will usually do something as they do have a responsibility to keep the roads safe.
