Ive been looking at different dog food on the internet and a lot contain copper. Why does dry food contain it and is it adviseable to try and buy one without. What effects can it have on your dog?
Linds
Copper is essential for various enzymes in the body and is thus needed. Copper deficiency can cause anaemia and disturb growth and the formation of cartilage - onesided feeding on raw muscle meat can cause this.
Some breeds like the Bedlington Terrier, but also the Cocker can have a genetic deficiency that causes them to store copper in the liver as the dog ages, damaging the liver. Healthy dogs just get rid of excess copper.
So copper in small amounts is not a bad thing. Typically, most kibbles contain between 10 - 30 mg copper per kg, and that is perfectly ok.
