I've been feeding my two raw now for over 2 months and they are doing fantastic on it and i wouldn't go back to dry for anything biggrin.gif
But Buddy's coat seems very dull and has lost it's shine. He's getting pure cod liver oil most days (except when he has fish) Can anyone suggest anything to bring the shine back to his coat smile.gif

I wouldn't supplement with cod liver oil as it contains mainly Vit A and he will have plenty of this when feeding liver. Omega 3 makes nice coats.

I agree with Christine. smile.gif Fish oil contains many omega 3s, but it is a highly processed product. Good alternatives are cold pressed flax seed oil or hemp seed oil or rape seed oil - the latter is cheapest, but doesn't contain as much omega 3 as the others.

Another thing might be some extra biotin and vitamins of the B complex - don't know how much he gets with his diet. Some dried brewers yeast might help.

Let's have a look at him, if you can post up a pic that would be great wink.gif The trouble with adding supplements is that you will be giving them too many of a certain type, as in the cod liver oil, too much Vit A won't do him any good at all and the dull coat might even be the result of feeding this. Just stick to the raw diet without adding anything extra and see what he's like in a few weeks wink.gif

I have been feeding my 2 raw for about 20 months and they have never been given any supplements.
Cassie is a B/w springer and her coat is to die for very smooth and silky.
Dottie is a L/w springer and she has a diff coat /a bit more hay wire and courser than cassie. Dottie has bad hair days lol. Dotties coat never shines like Cassie's coat no matter how many times i brush it.They both have exactly the same diet.

Has he been castrated?

Mollie was speyed and that has caused her coat to dull. It was something I worried about till the vet told me it was because of differing hormone levels.

Not sure if it's the same in males. Just a thought.

I had the same problem with hendrix. He just didn't seems to shine.. so I started to add an egg once or twice a week.. Its seems to help... That and you might try swiching out the shampoo you use on him... I use a 3 in one... and that also seemed to help. But I agree with Christine, Omega 3 would work great to... bet thas whats in the eggs wink.gif lol hope this helps...

Also some dogs just don't shine that well.. but try our suggestions and talk to your vet too.

Sorry i haven't replied to any of your suggestions, i've not been on for a few days.

Right where to start, first off yes he's had the snip about 3 years ago but his coat hasn't been too bad till lately so i thought he was either getting something he shouldn't in his diet or he was missing something. I started giving them cod liver oil mainly for Shanie cause she was a bit constipated and i didn't think it would do Buddy any harm, so he's been getting a little aswell~time to rethink that.
I can't get a pic up at the minute cause my camera's bust rolleyes.gif He's just been clipped out too and it's made his coat look even worse, it usually looks nice and shiny when he's just been clipped and very soft but it just looks really dull. I've never seen his coat look this bad before.
He gets a whole egg about 2/3 times a week.

I think i'll lay off the cod liver oil and see how he goes. He's never had problems with his coat before, it's always been soft and shiny, so i'll see how he goes without it.

What sort of things do you suggest i use for Shanie, she sometimes seems a little constipated and i was told to add cod liver oil which would help her. I don't know if it's her age (she's just gone 10)or the new diet. The first time she had lamb she was a little bunged up so someone suggested giving her cod liver oil which does seem to have helped, but if someone can suggest something else for her that would be great smile.gif

Heres some tips for the constipation...

QUOTE
If your dog or cat is having the occasional case of constipation or diarrhea, one of the things that might help is canned pumpkin. Yes canned pumpkin in its pureed form (NOT pumpkin pie filling) is a fantastic stool softener which makes it a good natural remedy for constipation. It often helps with upset stomach or indigestion for both cats and dogs. It is very rich in fibre and adding just one or two teaspoonfuls to your pet's food often gets the system moving in no time. Dogs will occasionally want to eat it directly and that's fine too. Sometimes though, finicky cats and dogs won't touch it no matter what you do.

On the opposite end of things is diarrhea. Since the dietary fibre in canned pumpkin absorbs water, it can be a great help to a cat or dog that has diarrhea. Some pet owners report that it firms up their pet's loose stools or diarrhea within a few hours. Again one to two teaspoonfuls is all that is needed.

Hope this helps yah out some.
