Due to the lack of training clubs etc around here I have been out and bought a clicker training book by Karen Pryor and a clicker - determined to do a bit of training with both Archie and George.
Read the book to make sure I didn't do more harm than good etc etc etc., and started as the book said with George as he's the most disobedient of the two. Went great I think we may actually be on to a semblance of normality.
Then Archies turn, well, at the first click the poor little chap turned and ran right to the top of the garden and refused to come down or come near me for the next 20 minutes.
He's not gun shy, he's ok with loud noises etc., but really terrified of the clicker!!!
Good job he's quite obedient anyway as he wont be getting anymore training with the clicker.
Take some blue tack to quieten the click sound, some dogs don't like it so loud.
You can also put it behind your back and click or inside your pocket or put a towel over your hand. He will soon become accustomed to it. You can also find quieter ones or just use the word yes (anyword will do) instead.
Clicker training is good to develope a thinking doggy.
You could try using a clicky ballpoint pen. The sound works fine as a marker and doesn't usually upset dogs

Try a different clicker they all make different sounds. Also some clickers you are able to adjust the sound.
