Hi frankie has pulled through from his bad start in life, seperated from his mum at 3 or 4 weeks, been in hospital etc, read all about him in the introduce yourself section. he is now nearly 7 weeks old and is like a normal puppy although VERy small still.
He is home now and trying hard to wee etc on his puppy pad outsid e his crate and the one in it. \He has started nipping and as he was not with his mum and siblings how do I teach him bite inhibition??

I realise this has to be done and I want to get it right, I think he has to bite to an extent to learn but I think he needs to learn also that it hurts and he must not do it, any help appreciated.
Also any other hints on house training appreciated, if he starts to wee of his paper I have tried to lift him onto it quick and praise him. thanks

With the biting unfortunatly he missed out on what other dogs would usually teach him. I would definatly get him out and about with other dogs as much as you possibly can because although he needs to know he cant bite you he also cant bite them and he will need to learn what hurts and what doesnt.

If i were you i would always use toys for games and even if he accidently puts his teeth on you i would scream as loud as you can and walk out the room leaving him for about 30 secs. Take the toy with you too, teeth on skin means end of fun.
Do this screaming and walking out of the room thing as soon as his teeth make contact with your skin even if he didnt mean it or it didnt hurt, walk out of the room where ever you can, if you cant i would turn my back on him completely ignore him for 30secs.....i use this amount of time because any longer and they have lost all thoughts why you went out...any less time then its not effective.

hope this helps

All the bite inhibition stuff you need to know is in the link.

Re house training, I'd skip the paper indoors bit and go straight to teaching him outside is the only place that's worth going, but giving him a small tasty treat when ever he 'goes' outside.

Yes bite inhibition needs teaching and that linkie is very good.

Just one thing though - Chase is now 17 months old and he still sometimes feels the need to nip even though I followed all the ideas (he doesn't break skin but he does bruise). While at the Fling Tracey did some TTouch on Chase and commented on how tight his face was (hard to explain but it is like his skin is really tight over his skull) which is a breed trait. I have though started massaging him around his gums and face and it is really chilling him.

The point of my post is that it might be an idea, if you don't think you are winning with it, to get to see someone doing TTouch or Canine Massage cos it may be more than him not getting the idea.
