How appropriate, we just had a furminator discussion on an email discussion group I belong to!

The general vibe was that the Furminator is very good but it is possible to overdo it and burn the dog and/or damage the coat. Others chimed in and claimed a flea comb does the same thing for a lot less money. Basically, everyone who has a furminator and uses it, loves it. Those who show their dogs in confirmation do NOT use it because it cuts the coat or does something and is not recommended for the show ring (I would think in any venue besides confirmation, it would be fine)

I have been debating between a Furminator (about $30US) or a Mars King-Coat (about $35US) If I go with the Mars, there is actually a knock off brand that I can get for about $11 and comes highly recommended by several groomers on the list. I am not sure if you guys can get it or if shipping would be hideous.

Tinsel has some butt fluff that I would like to thin out a bit and this looks to be easier than me mastering thinning shears. Here is the knock off I am looking at:

Tinsel -- I'm from Kansas; You?

I just got my furminator from a vet ($34). It works well getting the winter dead stuff off my boys. I had to shave my boys this year for a number or reasons, but I want to keep up on it with the furminator so it is not such a bad job. I still do the feathers with it.

I got the medium one so I could do the cat too. If I were to do it again, I would probably get the small so it worked better on the cat. He loves it.

My kids are rescue so there's no showing here. I have done some hand stripping with them and even though they are nuetered they don't seem to care. I think they like being shaved since it get so hot here. All my other springers seemed to like it too.

I can recommend it for what I use it for. You do want to be careful not to get overly aggressive with it. I think you could irritate skin if you used it too hard. I don't think springies have as much of a coat as some of the dogs it is used on.

I don't use a furminator oin Spaniels, I tens to use the coat king and use the furminator on shorter more wire type of coats like GSD's and the like

I found this handy tool on e bay
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Mat-King-Professiona...1QQcmdZViewItem

It looks like a cheaper version of the Coatking. It's very good i got one a few months ago and murphy is looking so handsome now. I got the 20 blades one.

I think they are better for thicker coated dogs. I use one on my border collie/lab mix and that thing is awesome! And she seems to really love it.. It is nowhere near the same as a flea comb.. Worth every penny in my opinion.
