Hi, I'm new to Springer ownership (picked up Jasper yesterday) but we have got a rescue greyhound who was raised in kennels all her life until we brought her home at 3.5 years old. She had never seen the inside of a house but was classed as 'kennel clean'. She has never soiled in the house as we showed her where to go when we picked her up. So housetraining can be done later if necessary.
Never having had a dog in an external kennel, I wouldn't like to comment on whether you should put a puppy outside alone or not.

well from the comments it sounds as if I would be better letting him stay in the first few nights until he settles with us, and then moving him out to his kennel...as I said before it is not the Housetraining that is concerning me..there will be ample opportunity to do this during the daytime when Jo is home......I was enquiring more about the possible negative points of putting him out on his own straight away...and worried that the benefit of being able to go to the toilet when he wanted outside the kennel...would be outweighed by the anxiety of being alone.....

Your pup does have the advantage of being used to being outside, albeit with company. Vinnie went from being an indoor dog to an outdoor dog within 72 hours! Still, he seems perfectly happy with the arrangements.
