I have just be told there is a two and a half year old girl cocker offered in 'big on pets' free to a good home.
What do I do. I'm off to write the ad down in the morning and will ring them. I dont want it going to the wrong home.
I cant get it and keep it here with me. My dog is entire.
Advice please anyone, thank you.

Hi Lorraine

Chances are the dog will be gone by the morning unless the owners are very careful in who they re home it to.

When I see anything like this in the paper, I phone the owner, and politely explain how dangerous it could be for their dog etc etc. Many of them are horrified to hear what could happen to their dogs by giving it away for free. I then urge them to rehome it via a proper rescue centre. Have a number ready to give them just in case. And tell them about all the dedicated rescue sites that could help them too.

If they insist on re homing it themselves, advise them about homechecks and vet checks before they part with their dog. And explain why it is important to ensure she is spayed to prevent her falling into the hands of puppy farmers.

Hopefully someone else will come up with a better suggestion for you before morning.

Hi Rainie

Spaniel Trust is happy to offer rescue back up to this dog and a spay, rehoming if needed?

Can you pm and let me know if that is needed?

Just a quick reminder to everyone:

Puppy Farmers have realised that they are not selling their puppies in the present economic climate and are offloading breeding stock onto BYB and the unsuspecting general public who at present are less aware of the present financial crisis in puppy farming. Please be very careful when answering these adverts everyone and take someone with you when you go to visit the dog!

Thanks all. Cocker went last night. (It is dark brown and tan, 2yrs old, pedigree good with children and up to date with injections) I spoke to the owner this morning explaining all my concerns. She said it went to a mother and son. I asked her to contact me if it didnt work out for whatever reason. And I gave her local contact numbers for cocker spaniel rescue reps.
I went to the wrong shop to start with. It was PAH. I have spoken with the girl on the checkout voicing my concerns and also to the manager. Manager was happy for me to remove the advert before I had spoken to the lady offering dog to another home.
I plan to make an a4 eyecatching list of local spaniel rescues/helplines and put it in my local petshops and feedmerchants. smile.gif
Do I need permission from rescue contacts before doing this?
Any other advice will be greatly appreciated.
I would love to build a few kennels and become a fosterer but am currently saving up to have my ess castrated, and finances are short. sad.gif

Can't speak for the other rescue's but wouldn't think they'd have a problem with the idea, Spaniel Trust are ok with that so you can put us on your poster, thanks rainie. smile.gif
