We have had our 2 yr old springer for 2 months now (she was a rescue) who shadow chases really badly, when we got her she had been caged up outside day and night. we keep her in the house, obviously all she had to amuse herself was shadows. when she sees a shadow she is fixated and licks the area constantly shakes with exitement and her tail goes 10 to the dozen. Trying to distract her and get her away from the area is quite difficult. and can be quite disturbing to watch. Trying to tire her by long walks only makes her worse when she gets back. Any advice and help will be greatly appreciated as she is such a lovely dog, im hoping that eventually now she is living indoors and we are trying to stimulate her as much as possible with time this will reduce?

if someone has come up with a solution for this one please let me know, not much help i know, all i can say is that we have had the minx two years now, and to be fair she only does it when she is stressed these days, but we have tried a load of different things none that have seemed to work, she has got a lot better, at least your girl is only licking, millie used to head butt the walls. All i can say is that time is a great healer, and given it and a lot of love she will come out of it smile.gif smile.gif

You have my sympathy.... I also have a shadow chaser. Bilbo runs around in circles, and dives under coffee tables and chairs whining..... it's quite upseting to watch him and it's hard to distract him when he's wired up. I have found him to be worse when we have visitors.... If I move him out into the hall, seperated from us by the baby gate he lies down and settles..... it's weird....

No advice here either I'm afraid, everything we have tried on Jack has failed. He's not quite as bad as he used to be although I think this is more due to the fact that he's getting older and more importantly that we haven't had as much sun as usual.

The only thing we tried that seemed to work even slightly was to have him on a long line in the house/garden and bring him to us or walk him round if he shadow chased, then give a treat.

I'd like to say it was better at night but unfortunatly not - torches are even more exciting than shadows!!

We haven't cured Sam either, infact if he cant see a shadow he makes his own to chase.

Again, not really much advice from here either sad.gif He has got a bit better, no longer shadow chases indoors really, but outside on a sunny day and he disappears onto another planet. We just make sure that he gets plenty of walks, and lots of mental stimulation.

We were away this weekend in Norfolk with him, and he was dreadful sad.gif

contacted a behaviourist and she came to the house, she thinks it maybe something to do with attention seeking when me n other half are in the house together watching tv (not showing her any attention) not sure if this is right but will give it a go! xx
